How to Properly Hold a Football

Holding onto the football correctly is one of the most important jobs in football. After all, having the ball is the most crucial part of controlling and winning games. 1. Point the Tip of the Football into the Palm of Your Hand

The first step is to point the tip of the football into the palm of your hand. This will mostly be in your dominant hand for more control. It doesn’t matter which tip or side of the ball. If you start with the tip in your palm, you’re doing it right so far.

2. Place Your Index Finger at the Top of the Ball

The next step is to put your index finger at the top of the ball. This will lead to the ball resting now on your forearm. So, the tip of the ball is in your palm, while the index finger is on top, with the side of the ball now against your forearm.

3. Curl Your Wrist and Hand Under the Ball

Next, your wrist and hand should be able to curl under the ball to keep it more secure. Find a spot where you are comfortable yet still firm. It should now start to feel tighter on your arm.

4. Tuck the Football into Your Chest

After completing the previous steps, it is time to tuck the football into your chest. This creates the four points of contact that you are looking for: your hand, chest, forearm, and bicep. At this point, the ball should be firmly in your grasp. However, the last step will make it nearly impossible to fumble the ball.

5. Wrap Your Opposing Hand Over the Football

The final step is to wrap your opposing hand over the football. This creates a perfect shell of strength and power around the football. Once this technique is mastered, it will be near impossible for defenders to strip the ball from your hands.
